Välimeren risteily osa 2: Hytti ja laivalla toimimisen haasteet /Mediterranean cruise part 2: the cabin and the challenges while on board

Moi taas!

Hi again! In the first part I already mentioned our cabin and just now I added few photos in it as well. Let’s get back to it, I’ll tell more details and elaborate on what criteria I had in choosing it. The cabin really was spacious. In comparison with the accessible cabins of Silja and Viking, it felt luxurious at first. On the first night, I noticed that the ship also had room service and it was included in cruise, apart from night time orders. There were fish-, chicken and meat dishes on the menu. As well as salads, desserts, coffee and tea etc. That was luxurious too, to order in and serviced quickly. The orders came in about 40 mins. The first night I chose breaded flounder and Tuula chose something else. The food generally good, it was cool to be able to dine in own time and without rushing. It also was the first time I ever used room service as it would be so much more expensive in Finnish hotels.

Alunperin olin ajatellut ottavani parvekehytin.

Originally, I thought I’d take a cabin with a balcony, however, it would have costed over 100 euros more than the cheapest standard cabin, so I decided against it. Main thing was that the cabin was an accessible kind. At times, I did miss a balcony and a window. The air was quite bad and stuffy. If only we could’ve ventilated sometimes. The fitted carpet made it worse by making the cabin dustier. Both me and Tuula coughed often.  Still, we found some wind from the deck outside and we spent quite a lot of time there on our first day at sea. We also participated in the mandatory rescue drill. In the evening we went to listen to a band.

Päivä meni ihan mukavasti. Laiva vaan keinui tosi paljon, aallot olivat suuria. Keinunta toi avustamiseenkin omat haasteensa.Turnerin käyttö ja pystyssä pysyminen jännitti välillä. Se hankaloitti erityisesti siirtymisiä, eikä vessan liukas lattia tietenkään helpottanut tilannetta. Tuulankin tasapaino meinasi välillä pettää. Kerran ollessani vessassa lähdin istuessani kallistumaan liikaa vasemmalle, Tuula sai kuitenkin asentoni korjattua. Kaide olisi auttanut paljon.

The next day went nicely. Though the ship swayed a lot and the waves were big. The sway brought its own challenges to assisting as well. At times, using the Turner and staying up worried me. It made the transfers complicated and the slippery floor of the toilet didn’t help. Tuula almost lost her balance few times as well. Ones, while I was sitting in the toilet I started slipping to the left too much but luckily Tuula managed to fix my position. Next time we put my electric wheelchair to my left side and I held on to it. A handrail would’ve helped a lot.

Well, all that was a minor worry. Bigger disappointments awaited the following day in Santorini. I wasn’t able to visit it even with my manual wheelchair. I would’ve had to walk. I realised I can’t thus I hit a wall. At the time it really pissed me off a whole lot! I tried to sheer my miserable day up with a foot massage but it was fully booked for the day. I messaged Sanna about the whole ordeal. Thank you for listening! In any case it’s a beautiful place, I recommend it to everyone who can walk!

Välimeren risteily, osa 1, lähtö ja alkufiilikset/ Mediterranean cruise, part 1, departure and starting vibes

Moikka taas!

Hi again! Now it's over then, I returned from the Mediterranean cruise on Sunday. During it I couldn’t update my blog as I really didn't have time and using the internet on board was real expensive, about 30 dollars per day. But where did I get the idea and how did the beginning go? About 2,5 years ago the first Caribbean related post was published at Palmuasema. Since then a 10 part series was published there, along with a video.

I carefully read the stories and watched the video. Soon I was dreaming so much my school work started to suffer. I was preoccupied and my thoughts were at the Caribbean. My travel fever was really bad and it was getting worse!
Not soon after I was asking for an offer from Matka-agentit. I said my budget would be 1500-1600 Euros per person. They said that budget wouldn’t quite be enough for the Caribbean but it would for the Pacific.

On Sunday Aug. 8th was the long awaited departure date. I woke up at 4 am and a taxi took me to the terminal 2 of the airport. I had to take care of some employer duties so we didn’t have time for lunch or shopping. However, the flight went well, though Finnair could've made more effort on the entertainment during the flight. Some light film would've been nice as the flight lasted 3 hours and felt dull. When we arrived to Rome, we took a taxi to the harbor from the airport. We searched for the driver for a while. He was friendly and professional. We arrived to the harbor around 1 pm and the ship would embark at 5 pm. We were considering what to do before that and I thought I could have some ice-cream or go to a café but then we were escorted to the check-in.

The check-in was big and somehow market-like. It was overcrowded and took a long time. They gave us a health survey forms, in which they asked about if I’ve had any contagious deceases such as diarrhea, flu or throat pain. Well, my throat did feel a bit rough and I had a small cough but naturally I didn’t report it, I really wanted to get on the cruise, and I wasn’t gong to let a small cough to stop me!

Jewel of the seas

Hyttiin päästyämme jouduimme odottamaan tavaroitani aika kauan.

After we got into our cabin, I had to wait quite a while for my luggage. It was a shame cause I needed my Turner-aid to get to the toilet as I couldn't do so without it and one assistant.
Luckily, the Turner eventually arrived and no damage was done. Still, the floor of the accessible toilet was slippery and there was no railing on the left side. The cabin was spacious, at least three times bigger than the similar cabins of Silja or Viking.

10 päivää uuteen seikkailuun/ 10 days till the new adventure

Ihanaa, kohta se alkaa, odotettu Välimeren risteily. Olen todella innoissani ja täpinöissäni. Enää 10 päivää ja sitten koittaa lähtö uuteen seikkailuun. Mahtava fiilis! Lennän Roomaan sunnuntaiaammuna 7.8. Sieltä invataksilla satamaan ja alkuillasta laivaan. Sitten on yksi meripäivä, jonka aikana voin tehdä Jewel of The seas laivalla kaikkea kivaa. Senjälkeen käymme kolmessa Kreikan ja yhdessä Turkin kohteessa. Ateena, Hania, Santorini, Kusadasi..

Soon it starts, the long awaited Mediterranean cruise, lovely. I'm really excited and afluttered.10 more days left and then I embark on a new adventure, I feel great! I fly to Rome on Sunday Aug. 7th . From there I take a cab to the harbor and then to the ship in the early evening. Then we have one day at sea, during which I can do all sorts of cool things on board of the Jewel of The seas. After that we visit three destinations in Greece and one destination in Turkey. The Athens, Hania, Santorini, Kusadasi..

Upeiden käyntikohteiden lisäksi aion uida, herkutella, kokeilla ehkä jotain kylpylähoitoa, nauttia laivan viihteestä ja musiikista jne.

In addition to the fabulous destinations, I’m going to swim, to feast, maybe try out some of the spa treatments, enjoy the entertainment on the ship such as music etc.

Before the cruise I’m going to enjoy the Maritime Festival and a picnic cruise on Viking Line on Tuesday. Let's all also enjoy the Finnish summer, now that the heat is finally here.

Matkakuumeisen unelmia 2/ Dreams of the travel feverish part 2

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbc_LxfhSoY

Let's continue dreaming for a bit. Last time I said I might be going to Thailand next November or January 2018. Naturally, I’m a bit anxious about the long flight as well as the durability of my body, but if everything goes well I’d also like to go Australia. As I mentioned before a friend of mine visited there. Naturally she praised her trip and I got excited of the idea. The only downside is that the flight lasts over 30h, but if the flight to Thailand goes well, I can give this one a go too. It's a fitness test of sorts to my body.

However, I like to challenge myself and test my boundaries. There's many ways to do it of course, some go bungee jumping or sky diving, this is my way.

One reason to my increased interest towards Australia is that Sanna is talking about it at Palmuasema too. Travel fever is contagious. Pirkko, the writer of the Meriharakka blog, was highly praising the trips of the Olympia travelling agency so I ordered their brochure. I'd be very interested about their Canadian tours or a cruise to the pacific. The latter would require a win in a lottery in order to come true, in the meantime here's some vibe music. ttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAIFOR0Tmyw

Matkakuumeisen unelmia../ Dreams of the travel feverish ...

Moikka taas!

Hi again! The Stockholm cruise is long gone and the Mediterranean is approaching. It's less than a month away. Due to my travel fever's chronic nature, I’m already dreaming of new trips and in this post I share my latest dreams.

I’d like to go to Las Palmas, cause I want to see more than Tenerife of the Canary Islands. As the trip is quite expensive, it'll have to wait some time. As I mentioned last time I’m going to visit Stockholm in Nov.- Dec. to see the Christmas market. I'm going to spend one or two nights in there.

Keväällä 2017 toteutuu CP-lehden lukijamatka ihanalle Teneriffalle, Mar Y Soliin.

On spring of 2017, a reader trip of the CP-magazine to the lovely, Mar Y Sol in Tenerife comes true.

And finally, as an icing on the cake, I reveal the answer to the question on the blog's FB-page: Hua Hin, Thailand. That's where I’ll be heading in the beginning of 2018 at the latest. I've already provisionally discussed it with Tuula. It'll be my first long distance flight then, unless I go to Seattle before then. My Thailand-fever began when I was watching Thailand videos from Palmuasema and read stories about it. One friend of mine has also praised it.

Kokemuksia Wasa-laivasta/ experiences about the Wasa-ship

Wasa-laiva on upea!

The Wasa-ship was amazing! While looking at it and touring the museum, I got a pretty good idea how demanding building a ship was. The museum had for example a tablet with a game, with which even a layman could get a real idea of all the factors that make a ship to sink.

Building a ship really wasn’t easy and neither was the life of the sailors in the 15th century, let the pictures speak for themselves! Taking them was a bit difficult due to blur in the museum. I picked the best ones on here.

Pienoismalli/ A miniature

Museossa voi myös katsoa filmin Wasa-laivan uppoamisesta. Onnettomuuden syytä ei ole vieläkään saatu selville.  Kierrokseen kului 3,5-4 tuntia. Senjälkeen menin kahvilaan syömään ihanan tunnbrödin, foliossa olevan täytetyn rieskan muusilla, paahtopaistilla ja piparjuurikastikkeella.
Lähtiessäni takaisin laivaan sain idean yöpyä Tukholmassa marraskuussa, käydä joulutoreilla siellä.

While in the museum, you can watch a film about the Wasa-ship sinking. It's still not known what caused the accident. The tour took between 3,5 to 4h. After the tour I went in to the café and had a lovely tunnbröd, which is a flat bread with potato mash, roast and horseradish sauce. As I headed back to the boat, I got an idea about staying over night in Stockholm in November so I can visit the Christmas markets there.
