Välimeren risteily osa 2: Hytti ja laivalla toimimisen haasteet /Mediterranean cruise part 2: the cabin and the challenges while on board

Moi taas!

Hi again! In the first part I already mentioned our cabin and just now I added few photos in it as well. Let’s get back to it, I’ll tell more details and elaborate on what criteria I had in choosing it. The cabin really was spacious. In comparison with the accessible cabins of Silja and Viking, it felt luxurious at first. On the first night, I noticed that the ship also had room service and it was included in cruise, apart from night time orders. There were fish-, chicken and meat dishes on the menu. As well as salads, desserts, coffee and tea etc. That was luxurious too, to order in and serviced quickly. The orders came in about 40 mins. The first night I chose breaded flounder and Tuula chose something else. The food generally good, it was cool to be able to dine in own time and without rushing. It also was the first time I ever used room service as it would be so much more expensive in Finnish hotels.

Alunperin olin ajatellut ottavani parvekehytin.

Originally, I thought I’d take a cabin with a balcony, however, it would have costed over 100 euros more than the cheapest standard cabin, so I decided against it. Main thing was that the cabin was an accessible kind. At times, I did miss a balcony and a window. The air was quite bad and stuffy. If only we could’ve ventilated sometimes. The fitted carpet made it worse by making the cabin dustier. Both me and Tuula coughed often.  Still, we found some wind from the deck outside and we spent quite a lot of time there on our first day at sea. We also participated in the mandatory rescue drill. In the evening we went to listen to a band.

Päivä meni ihan mukavasti. Laiva vaan keinui tosi paljon, aallot olivat suuria. Keinunta toi avustamiseenkin omat haasteensa.Turnerin käyttö ja pystyssä pysyminen jännitti välillä. Se hankaloitti erityisesti siirtymisiä, eikä vessan liukas lattia tietenkään helpottanut tilannetta. Tuulankin tasapaino meinasi välillä pettää. Kerran ollessani vessassa lähdin istuessani kallistumaan liikaa vasemmalle, Tuula sai kuitenkin asentoni korjattua. Kaide olisi auttanut paljon.

The next day went nicely. Though the ship swayed a lot and the waves were big. The sway brought its own challenges to assisting as well. At times, using the Turner and staying up worried me. It made the transfers complicated and the slippery floor of the toilet didn’t help. Tuula almost lost her balance few times as well. Ones, while I was sitting in the toilet I started slipping to the left too much but luckily Tuula managed to fix my position. Next time we put my electric wheelchair to my left side and I held on to it. A handrail would’ve helped a lot.

Well, all that was a minor worry. Bigger disappointments awaited the following day in Santorini. I wasn’t able to visit it even with my manual wheelchair. I would’ve had to walk. I realised I can’t thus I hit a wall. At the time it really pissed me off a whole lot! I tried to sheer my miserable day up with a foot massage but it was fully booked for the day. I messaged Sanna about the whole ordeal. Thank you for listening! In any case it’s a beautiful place, I recommend it to everyone who can walk!

Välimeren risteily, osa 1, lähtö ja alkufiilikset/ Mediterranean cruise, part 1, departure and starting vibes

Moikka taas!

Hi again! Now it's over then, I returned from the Mediterranean cruise on Sunday. During it I couldn’t update my blog as I really didn't have time and using the internet on board was real expensive, about 30 dollars per day. But where did I get the idea and how did the beginning go? About 2,5 years ago the first Caribbean related post was published at Palmuasema. Since then a 10 part series was published there, along with a video.

I carefully read the stories and watched the video. Soon I was dreaming so much my school work started to suffer. I was preoccupied and my thoughts were at the Caribbean. My travel fever was really bad and it was getting worse!
Not soon after I was asking for an offer from Matka-agentit. I said my budget would be 1500-1600 Euros per person. They said that budget wouldn’t quite be enough for the Caribbean but it would for the Pacific.

On Sunday Aug. 8th was the long awaited departure date. I woke up at 4 am and a taxi took me to the terminal 2 of the airport. I had to take care of some employer duties so we didn’t have time for lunch or shopping. However, the flight went well, though Finnair could've made more effort on the entertainment during the flight. Some light film would've been nice as the flight lasted 3 hours and felt dull. When we arrived to Rome, we took a taxi to the harbor from the airport. We searched for the driver for a while. He was friendly and professional. We arrived to the harbor around 1 pm and the ship would embark at 5 pm. We were considering what to do before that and I thought I could have some ice-cream or go to a café but then we were escorted to the check-in.

The check-in was big and somehow market-like. It was overcrowded and took a long time. They gave us a health survey forms, in which they asked about if I’ve had any contagious deceases such as diarrhea, flu or throat pain. Well, my throat did feel a bit rough and I had a small cough but naturally I didn’t report it, I really wanted to get on the cruise, and I wasn’t gong to let a small cough to stop me!

Jewel of the seas

Hyttiin päästyämme jouduimme odottamaan tavaroitani aika kauan.

After we got into our cabin, I had to wait quite a while for my luggage. It was a shame cause I needed my Turner-aid to get to the toilet as I couldn't do so without it and one assistant.
Luckily, the Turner eventually arrived and no damage was done. Still, the floor of the accessible toilet was slippery and there was no railing on the left side. The cabin was spacious, at least three times bigger than the similar cabins of Silja or Viking.
