Meripäiväreissun haasteita../Challenges of the Maritime Festival trip

      Moi taas!/ Hi again!

    Se on kohta heinäkuun puoliväli ja Meripäivät. Nehän pidetään Kotkassa 23.-26.7, torstaista
   sunnuntaihin. Olen käynyt Meripäivillä yli 10 kertaa, 18- tai 19-vuotiaasta asti.
   Olen viihtynyt hyvin, aina on löytynyt paljon kivaa tekemistä. Ohjelmasta kerron lisää
  myöhemmin. Nyt paneudun tämänvuotisen reissun  kulkemishaasteisiin.

Soon it'll the middle of July and The Maritime Festival, which will be held in Kotka from 23rd till 26th, from Thursday to Sunday. I've been attending the festival over 10 times ever since I was 18 or 19 years old. I'll tell more about the program later but for now I'll focus on the challenges of the trip. 

  Yleensä olen mennyt Kotkaan autollani, jota avustajani ovat ajaneet.Cp- vammaani liittyvän hahmotushäiriön vuoksi en pysty ajamaan sitä itse. En hahmota vasenta ja oikeaa, suunnat menevät pahasti sekaisin. Reittien oppiminen on minulle todella vaikeaa.

Usually, I've taken my own car there, which was driven by my assistants, as I can't drive due to my Minimal Brain Dysfunction, which is related to my Cerebral palsy. I can't tell left from right and I mix directions quite badly. Learning paths is really difficult for me.

Tänä vuonna ajattelin mennä Meripäiville Onnibussilla, koska useimmissa sen linja-autoissa on yksi pyörätuolipaikka. Palmuasemalla sitä kehuttiin kovasti ja päätin itsekin kokeilla.

This year I'd take the onnibus to the festival, because several of their buses are wheelchair accessible. they were also praised at palmuasema so I decided to give it a go.   

Minua vaan askarrutti yksi asia, sähköpyörätuolin lisäksi ottaisin reissulleni mukaan Turner-siirtymälaudan toiseksi apuvälineeksi. Mitenköhän Onnibussilla siihen suhtauduttaisiin? Soitin pyörätuoliasiakkaiden palvelunumeroon, virkailija lupasi selvitellä asiaa.

I was only worried about one thing. How would the company feel about me taking my Turner-transfer aid with as a second aid equipment? I called the service number for disabled costumers and the person there promised to look into it.  

Sain sähköpostiini pahoittelevan vastauksen, jossa sanottiin suunnilleen näin: Hei Helena, haluamme palvella kaikkia matkustajia, mutta linja-auton tavaratilat ovat niin pienet, ettei apuvälineesi mahdu kyytiin. Nyt odotan vielä vastausta Expressbussilta.

I received an apologetic response to my email, which said something like this: Hi Helena, we want to serve all costumers but the trunk of the bus is so small that your aid equipment wont fit in. Now I'm waiting for a response from  Expressbus.

 Harmillinen tilanne! Turner-siirtymisapuväline on kuvassa näkyvä valkoinen laite.
 Se on matkoilla yhtä välttämätön ja tärkeä kuin sähköpyörätuolini. Se tekee siirtymisistä turvallisia minulle ja säästää avustajan selkää.

Regrettable situation! The Turner-transfer aid is the white equipment in the picture. It's just as necessary and important as my electric wheelchair cause it makes the transfers safe for me and safes assistants back too.   

Oheisen kuvan valitsin tähän myös siksi, että se kuvaa hyvin yhtä esteettömän matkailun haastetta, kuinka saada kaikki tarpeelliset tavarat kuljetettua määränpäähän asti?

I chose that picture also because it describes one of the challenges of accessible traveling very well. how to transport all the necessary things to the destination?  

Tuossa kuvassa avustajani Tuula miettii juuri sitä, hänellä saisi olla viisi kättä. Olemme lähdössä Toscanasta ja tavaran määrä on melkoinen.

At the time of the picture my assistant Tuula is considering that she ought to have five hands. We

were about to leave Tuscany and we have quite a lot of stuff. 

Näissä tilanteissa vaaditaan luovuutta ja ongelmanratkaisukykyä. Samoin apuvälineet joutuvat kovalle koetukselle matkoilla ja varsinkin lentokentillä. Niiden käsittely ja vienti ruumaan on aika kovakouraista, aina saa jännittää säilyvätkö ne ehjinä.

These situations require creativity and ability to solve problematic situations. The aid equipment must endure some harsh handling during trips especially in the airports. There's always some worry about whether they will come back intact.  

Mutta hätä keinot keksii, aina selvitään jollain konstilla.

But where there's will, there's a way.
